The seven-week-old cub's strength is improving and it has begun getting up onto its feet to start exploring the den it shares with mother Liya.

Sea World director of marine sciences Trevor Long says the cub's latest development means it won't be long until the bear is able to venture outside for the first time.

"It is an exciting time for our team as we begin to get a first glimpse into the cub's personality with the little one starting to interact with mum Liya outside of feeding and sleeping," Mr Long said.

The little animal was fascinated by everything as she stepped out into the outside world . The little cub snuggles with her mother. Polar bears can live to around 18 years of age. Peekaboo! The bear looks happy and excited as she jumps up from behind a rock.

The cub, whose gender remains unknown, and its twin were born on April 26 with the other bear dying a couple of weeks later despite intervention from Sea World staff.

The bears were the third and fourth cubs born at the park's Polar Bear Shores exhibit since it opened in 2000.

It is anticipated the cub will be moved to a public display some time in September.
