Around 671 million international tourists visited European countries in 2017, marking an eight percent growth compared to 2016 thanks in large part to Chinese, Russian, French and Germany holidaymakers.

According to the latest stats out of the "European Tourism 2017 Trends and Prospects" report, prepared by the European Travel Commission, nearly all monitored destinations in the region saw an increase in tourist arrivals, with more than half seeing a spike in excess of 10 percent.

The most notable performance came from Turkey, which experienced a 28 percent growth in recovery thanks in large part to a 465 percent spike in visits from Russian travelers, following security-related declines.

Iceland, which has held the title of fastest-growing destination in Europe since 2012, also saw another 24 percent spike in visitors last year.

Other destinations that posted significant growth include Montenegro (19 percent); Serbia (18 percent); Malta (16 percent); and Slovenia and Cyprus, which tied at 15 percent.

Chinese and Indian arrivals also helped Finland boost its tourism numbers 14 percent.

A weaker pound didn't stop Britons from traveling abroad, while tourists from France and Germany were also a source of notable arrivals for countries across Europe.
