When it comes to reducing high blood pressure experts say a two in one pill is more effective in both compliance and survival rates.

More than four and a half million Australians have high blood pressure and many of them remain untreated.

A study looked at the country's most commonly prescribed blood pressure tablets, called amlodipine and perindopril.

Using data from the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, researchers compared the long-term use and mortality rates of both drugs.

"We know that people are more likely to take a single pill than multiple pills," he said.

"Compliance with medication is a huge issue and particularly so in people who have no symptoms," Prof Marwick said, Director and Chief Executive of the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute.

Dr Jeannie Yoo, medical adviser for NPS MedicineWise, says up to 50 to 80 percent of people don't persist with the medicines they've been prescribed.

"The problem is if you don't take your medicine, they can't have the benefit that it's intended," she said.

She says further studies are needed to confirm that the combination pill reduces mortality.

There are also other important ways to reduce blood pressure which includes eating more healthily, exercising and not smoking.
