Bill Shorten ' s wife Chloe has put pen to paper to share some of her favourite recipes.

Chloe Shorten launches her cookbook , called The Secret Ingredient, Chloe aims to have families take time to eat together, away from televisions a couple of times a week.

You can now make Dame Quentin Bryce's eggplant parmigiana at home, thanks to a new cookbook penned by Chloe Shorten, the former Governor General's daughter and wife of the federal opposition leader.

Ms Shorten's second book, The Secret Ingredient, is about the importance of eating dinner with your family.

Released on Tuesday, it shares recipes passed down from family, friends and neighbours, including Dame Bryce's eggplant parmigiana, business icon Wendy McCarthy's perfect roast chicken and a chocolate cake "so fine it was served in restaurants".

The book also details how she and Bill Shorten, 50, manage to find time to bring their own family together for meals.

"In stepfamilies, I've learned meals together are a fundamental peacekeeping force, a way of getting everyone to understand each other, share daily experiences and points of view," an extract from the book reads.

"The more times we sit together and break bread, the greater the chance to understand and accommodate each other - even if that sometimes means squabbles, tears or frustrations."

It detailed how she fell in love with the opposition leader and the process of introducing him to her children from a previous marriage.

Ms Shorten has two children, Rupert and Georgette, from her first marriage to architect Robert Parkin.

In 2009, she married Mr Shorten and they have a daughter, Clementine, together.

Mr Shorten and Dame Bryce are expected to attend the launch of the book in Melbourne on Tuesday.
